Jappe

vaben
Previously several members of the Jappe family believed that  the family name came from France, but according to oberingenieur Heinrich Jappe, who before world war two for many years researched into the roots of the Jappe family,  the Jappe genus came from The Frisian Islands. Because of floods disaster in 1362 many moved from the Islands and instead chose to settle in the Schlesvig-Holstein area in Germany. From here the genus has spread to the East and North.

The Jappe name is found in German cities like Bosau, Plön, Kiel and Lübeck. In Denmark Jappe was represented in Soroe, Nykoebing Falster and Copenhagen.
Asmus (Erasmus) Jappes weapons from the 17th century is found in the city library and on City Hall in in Lübeck.

Heinrich Jappe has released a family history about theJappe family, which,is to be found in the city library in Lübeck.

Allis Koed Jappe

Allis Koed Jappe

Allis was born  October 9th in Solbjerg sogn on Frederiksberg. Godfathers: E. A.  Hansen and Mrs P. Hansen, Frederiksvej 39.3, head of Division K. Koed Jappe, Gasvaerksvej 33.

She is the daughter of Leon Koed Jappe and Vita Deodata Hansen.

She was married in Solbjerg church to Joergen Ellegaard on  May 25th. 1941.

Up to 1959  Allis and Joergen lived with their three children, Jan Ib, and Kirsten, on Engvej 43, Sundby on Amager. The apartment consisted of two living rooms,  bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. In the bathroom there was both bathtub and shower. That was not normal standard at that time. In addition there was central heating throughout the House. The furnace was in the basement, and it was the tenants task to fill the coke in it.

In 1959 Allis and Joergen built the house on the Langedvej in Nedervindinge in Vordingborg. Their house was the first to be build on that road.

After Joergen's death in 1984, Allis stayed in the House until 2009, when she moved to an apartment in Naestved. Allis died 2011.

 Leon Koed Jappe

Leon was born  February 7th 1897 in Dannebrogsgade 21 in Copenhagen. He was the fourth child out of a bunch of 10.

He married  May 18 th 1919 with Vita Deodata Hansen. Vitas father Jacob Hansen and Leon's brother, Svend Aage Koed Jappe were best men.
Vita and Leon had two children. My mother Allis Koed Jappe and my uncle Bent Leon Koed Jappe.
Vita and Leon often moved, and in the family they talked about the fact, that Vita and Leon often not managed to unpack before they moved again. There are several reasons for,  why they moved so much, but in the end it always had something to do with lack of money, because Leon often had granted other people money.
In all the time I can remember, they lived at Florensvej nr. 6, Sundby on Amager. This apartment was not particularly large. There was a living room with a bay, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. The living room was not particularly big, so to Leon's parties all the adults sat in the living room, very close together, while my brother and sister, my two cousins and I squeezed together in the bay.

Leon lived the last years in a home called Soelund, Ryesgade 15. He died  February  7 th1985.

   Carl Conrad William Jappe

My great-grandfather, Carl Conrad Wilhelm Jappe, was born  may 16th 1855 in Ejegod mill at Nykoebing Falster. The parents were Elise Amalie Kragh and Jens Nicolai Jappe .

Great-grandfather moved to Frederiksberg in 1889 . He married Ane Margrethe Andersen Koed may 16th 1891 in Smidstrup church.  Ane Margrethe Andersen Koed was born on  January  12th 1863 in Haastrup, Jutland.
They had  8 children. Number 4 in the group was my grandfather Leon Koed Jappe.
In a census in 1911 we can see that the family lived in an apartment with 4 rooms, 1 girl's room, on Gasvaerksvej 33. The apartment cost the groom sum of 199 kr. in half-yearly rent.
At this time Carl worked as miller on Nielsen's mustard factory. Census informs curiously, that he walked to and from work.

At the children ,who were born before 1899, the birthplace is specified as Dannebrogsgade 21.
Carl Conrad died  June 8th 1918. Ane Margrethe lived to 1956. The last years of her life she lived with her youngest son Helmuth Jappe.

Jens Nicolai Jappe

My great-grandfather, Jens Nicolai Jappe, was born  september 9th 1819 in Soroe. He is the son of Peder Jappe and Marianne Bierring.

Jens Nicolai Jappe

April 10th 1845 he married Elise Amalie Kragh in Roskilde Cathedral. Elises mother, Vibeke Sophie Bierring, is a sister to Peder Jappes wife Marianne.

Jens Nicolai and Elise moved to Nykoebing Falster, where they copyholded the Ejegod mill. Jens Nicolai and Elise had 13 children. Several of the children died quite young. Other died as teenagers. One of them was the son Niels Peter Christian jappe, 1851-1870,who was ill most of his short life. The cost of a doctor and medicine was one of the reasons why Jens Nicolai finally had to sell the mill.

In 1873 the family moves to Bredgade mill in Slagelse, but they had to give that up too. After that they  rented the fishing atSoroe lake. Jens Nicolai was quickly forced to give up fishing because it was not very profitable. Instead he tried himself as an innkeeper at Osted kro by Ringsted. That too was no success, so the family moved to Roskilde where Jens Nicolai was innkeeper.

Throughout the comedown from 1873 to Jens Nicolais death  June 16th 1884 in Roskilde, he and Elise often received financial support from the father in law Niels Frederik Kragh, but it was apparently not enough to be successful.

A granddaughter, Fanny Fang, has provided a vivid picture of the mill family life in her small memoir: From Ejegod mill by Nykøbing.

Peder Jappe

Peder was born in Sveboelle in 1770. He was baptized in Avnsoe Church   april 29th 1770, where he was carried by SR. Jacobsen's girl frien of Aussoegaard. God fathers werfe Olle Jensen, Niels Jensen, Johan Ipsen blacksmith's wife Ellen Jensdatter, Johan Ulrichs wife Mariane and Peder Madsens wife, all of Sveboelle.
Peders father Ditlew  Henrich Jappe was freshwater fisherman. Peder was also fishing, and he took over the fisheries in Soroe after his father, and in 1819-1822, he was also fishing on the Tystrup Lake for landowner Nyegaard on Frederikskilde.Soro

Peder died  april 3'rd 1825 in Sorø and was buried  april 8th 1825.

April 3'rd declares his son Ditlev Henrik Jappe his father's death to the probate court : "that his father fisherman Peter Jappe had died last night,  leaving no other heirs than 10 children and his surviving widow, Mariane born Bjerring; and with these children of which  8 are teen agers and 2 minors Mariane wants to retain undivided possession of the estate after appropriation, for which she apply. As a result  this estate was not taken under treatment by the probate court. Signed J. S. in D. H. Jappe ".

After the husbands death Mariane is keft with 10 children. She did not marry again, so she had  to provide for the children herself. We do not know how she coped with that, but we get suggestions of how her life was by looking in the census.

In the census for Sorø parish in 1834, we can see that she is a pensioner and stay at  her son Ditlev Henrik. At this time she is 56 years old. Two of her children also live there. This is Jens Nicolai Jappe and Vilhelmine Jappe.

In 1845  Mariane lives in Realgaden in Soroe, and she has, according to the census, fishing as a living.

1850 can we read that Mariane lives in Fishercottage and at this time is living by her funds. Her son, Joergen Christian Jappe, died in 1847, and two of his children: Caroline Vilhelmine and Carl Dominico, are staying at Marianes house.

Mariane died in 1865. Then  Sorø Academi took over Fishercottage.

Death mentioned in Naestved Newspaper 23/10 1865 page 3: M. Jappe born Bjerring death 88 years.

Ditlew Henrik Jappe

There is every indication that my great-great-great-grandfather is identical with Ditlew Henrik (Heinrich) Jappe. According to the mormon database he was born  november 12th in 1719 Bosau by Oldenburg, Germany.

When he came to Denmark is  currently unknown, but  July 7th 1762 he according to Jystrup parish register married Johanne Larsen. Ditlew was fisher at Skjoldenaesholm estate at this point, and Johanne had been maid in the same location. Already July 11th was their first child, Henrik,   baptized, so it was at the last minute that they were married. Because of Johanne's advanced pregnancy, the marriage took place in the home.

Quote from church register: "7 July 1762 was fisher SR. Ditlef Henrich Jappe of Skjoldenaesholm and former maid Johanne Larsens therein without previous betrothal and banns of pulpit at home in their house married.
Best men: H. Berg from Lethreborg and C. F. Holst from Scholdenaesholm. "

They had seven children. 1. Hendrik Jappe, born 1762 in Skjoldnaesholm, 2. Cathrine Jappe, born 1764 in Soroe, 3. His Christian Jappe, born 1767 in Sveboelle, 4. Peder Jappe,my great-great-grandfather, born april 4th 1770 in Sveboelle, 5. Christiane Frederica Jappe, born 1775 in Soroe, 6. Marianne Jappe, born 1778 in Soroe, 7. Sophia Elisabeth Jappe, born february 14th 1779 in Soroe.

From 1771 until his death in 1783  Ditlew is fishing at Soroe lake.
In Soroe  Ditlew and Johanne lived with their seven children in "Bleghuset". Johanne took over fishing at the lake after Ditlews death, but she had to abandon it in 1787, when it was rented out.

The two brothers Peder and Hans Christian were fishermen as their father. Peder in Soroe and His Christian at Thule lake by Soroe.
